It was June 2015 when Rachel Summers, Administrative Services Director for the Town of Bennett, accepted the invitation to do a healthy workplace assessment, compliments of LiveWell Colorado’s HEAL Cities & Towns Campaign. That decision turned into an 8-step action plan and a goal to launch a formal wellness program for their 19 employees by January 2016.
Did they succeed? You bet they did! And then some…
With the help of Corren Lind, Rachel’s assistant with a big heart for both health and fellow employees, Bennett conducted their first health interest survey and culture audit mid-summer.
By August, the employees’ survey responses were analyzed and recommendations discussed.
In October, Bennett attended the HEAL Summit and gathered ideas for healthy meeting strategies, walking at work initiatives, and increasing employee awareness using FitBits (which they distributed to staff shortly thereafter).
Feeling inspired and motivated, Corren agreed to a work session in November to finalize the remaining steps in their action plan… creating the program structure, a guiding document (called a Charter), and a tracking card to simplify the program for the employees and those administrating it.
In December, decision-makers gave their official approval of all such documents and, thus – just six months later and right on schedule, Bennett’s “Be Healthy. Be Strong. Be Bennett!” incentive-based employee wellness program was officially ready for its January launch!
What’s happened since?
Monthly all-staff meetings now feature a wellness speaker or healthy spotlight, quarterly incentive-based wellness campaigns keep employees physically active and engaged in their overall health, paid 30-minute walking breaks have become an added benefit, a $50 subsidy helps make 5K, 10K, and other physical activity events more affordable, and preventive exams are promoted readily.
Are employees appreciating their new culture of health?
It appears so… as the wellness program received an overall 85% employee satisfaction rating at their last check-in. No doubt about it, if small-town Bennett can become a big-time workplace wellness champion, then any and all organizations can!
On both a personal level and corporate level, there is indeed health at every size.
Since 2015, Well Simplified has provided healthy workplace technical assistance to the Town of Bennett as part of LiveWell Colorado’s HEAL Cities & Towns Campaign.
